Derek Bourgeois graduated from Cambridge University with a first class honors degree in music, and then a subsequent doctorate. He spent two years at the Royal College of Music where he studied composition with Herbert Howells and conducting with Sir Adrian Boult. He has composed a considerable quantity of chamber, vocal and instrumental music, and stays active as an educator, director and composer.
Bone Apart for trombone with trombone ensemble accompaniment (2012) is dedicated to Brandt Attema. It is a three-movement work: 1. Napoleon, 2. Josephine and 3. Waterloo.
